The Movies

One evening I asked my Mom if I could go to the Kuhel Avenue Drive Inn, you mean by your self, yes ma’am, well I don’t know. I will think about it. Later that day mom told me I could go. I was going to meet some of my friends there. It was still daylight when I left to go. To get to the drive in theater I had to walk. I took a short cut through the orange grove’s. We lived off of Jessamine Lane so it was a long walk. I walked down the rail road track. I had been many times with my brother and cousin. After meeting my friends we went to the concession stand and ordered pop corn and a soda pop. We found a good place to sit down and watch the movie. The name of the movie was “The The Thing 1951Thing” it was a scary movie. After the movie we all left. On the way home walking by my self down the railroad track, I started thinking about the movie, every now and then I would here a noise. Thinking to myself it could be a wild cat, or a black panther, getting a little scared I started running, and looking back over my shoulder hoping not to stumble on the cross ties, as I was running I looked up in the sky and we had a full “moon”, a thought came to me, things that happen on a night of a full moon. There are a lot of shadows that seem to move from here to there. Let me tell you, my mind was working over time by now. Ever now and then I thought I would see something on the railroad track, as I got closer it was nothing. I was getting tired, so I started walking again. I could here a faint noise in the distant. Now what could that be? I stopped for a moment looking down the rail road track I could see a light. I then realized it was a train. I got off the railroad tracks. With a little luck it would be a fast moving “Union Pacific” freight train with only a few cars, and it was. As I stood there waiting for the train to pass. I reached in my pocket and pulled out a Baby Ruth candy bar, as I was standing their eating it. I was thinking I would never ever go to the drive in by myself again. I was now at the orange grove where I could take a short cut to the house. I walked into the grove, about fifty feet, I stopped, thinking there was no way I was going to walk through this grove at night by my self. I could not get the movie out of my mind. I turned around and ran back out, and headed on down the tracks. Finally reaching Holden Ave. I felt better now and I would be home in about thirty minutes. Mom was waiting up for me when I walked in the door, she said” son you OK?” “Yes ma’am”, but I told her I would never go to the drive in by myself again, “AND WALK HOME IN THE DARK” she said “you look scared son” “I am Mom.” I told her about the movie, and the long walk home. She said” son, your at home now.” and she gave me a big hug and a kiss on the cheek. I went to bed, laying there all snug and warm I said….
“Thank God for Mothers!”
